1. When was LeTip® formed?

LeTip® International, Inc. is the pioneer in professional networking organizations. LeTip® was founded in February, 1978 by Kenneth E. Peterson of San Diego, CA.

A former insurance salesman, Mr. Peterson has since expanded the concept to over 600 chapters throughout the U.S.A. and Canada.

2. How is LeTip® different from other networking organizations?

We hear consistently from members that switch to LeTip® that our meetings are more structured. We realize that your time is valuable, so meetings run on a set schedule.

The LeTip® system has been in practice for over 29 years. In that time we've learned what works and the system is designed to reinforce good practices.

3. Is LeTip® different than chamber networking breakfasts?

It's night and day.

Go to two chamber breakfasts. By the time the second one rolls around, you'll notice most of the people are different, your competition is there, few people know each other and even fewer referrals are being passed.

LeTip® chapters are allowed only one member per business category — it's like a little monopoly. You'll see the same people every meeting, so you'll actually get to know each other and your businesses. LeTip® also has a system of rewards and accountability for passing referrals.

4. What can I expect at a meeting?

Come prepared to introduce yourself and your business to our chapter members. You will have two opportunities to give a brief 30–second commercial about your business and to describe the type of clients you need. Be sure to bring approximately 50 business cards with you plus any brochures or flyers that you think will be helpful.

5. What if I just want to come and "look around" first?

That's just fine. You cannot join after attending just one meeting, so nobody will be pressuring you to do so. The first meeting just introduces you and your business to us and vice–versa, so you have nothing to lose by just checking us out.

6. If I like what I see and come back again, then what?

If you return, we'll consider you a serious prospective member. You can expect that the second meeting will be much like the first. If we like you, and you like us, we will extend an invitation for you to join.

7. How can I join?

There are a few steps to joining. First, you must locate a chapter with an opening for your business, such as ours (see the Services List and make sure that your profession is not taken yet).

You should then contact a member (see our Members page or to email us) and arrange to come to a meeting. Your first meeting is just to look around and you cannot apply for membership until your second meeting, so there is no pressure or risk to coming.

After two meetings, if you choose to apply, you must fill out the necessary paperwork and schedule to have your business inspected. The inspector's job is to verify the quality of your business since we want to be sure that we can refer you with confidence.

Once that is done, the chapter will vote and, upon approval, at that point you'll be a member!

8. How are professional standards maintained?

The primary purpose of being a member of LeTip® is to give and receive qualified business tips or leads. Tips are regularly reviewed by our chapter's Tipmaster to ensure that they meet professional criteria and represent a real value to the receiver.

9. How are members accountable for passing referrals?

During the meeting members fill out "tip forms" which inform fellow members of a referral as well as form the basis of our system of accountability. Our chapter keeps records of how many referrals each member has given and received, as well as revenues generated due to those referrals.

Members get recognized for exceptional referrals, being a top giver of referrals, etc. In turn these members usually receive more business.

10. Will I be responsible for bringing guests?

Once a member, many chapters do have bonuses for bringing guests or having them join. Within your first year as a member you will be responsible for bringing one new member into the chapter. We do this because growing the sphere of influence is important to the success of a chapter. It's very hard to network with just yourself!

11. As a member of LeTip®, am I confined to conducting business only with fellow members?

Certainly not — if for no other reason that we're all busy businesspeople and don't have time to track you!

Seriously though, if you have a good relationship established with a service provider, no one expects you to change. Most members find they do business with most of their fellow members because they know and trust them. If you support your fellow members, they will support you.

12. Will this be worthwhile for me? How much revenue can I expect?

Like any organization, you get back what you put into it. Naturally, we cannot make any promises or guarantees for revenue or earnings.

However, we do know that the average revenue per tip passed in our chapter is somewhere between $350 and $400 per tip. Obviously, depending on the service, some tips will generate more revenue than others while the smaller revenue tips generate more business than the larger revenue tips.

We can also say that many LeTip® members use their tips as their only source of marketing. They actually generate enough business from them to work by referral only.

All chapter members will be actively looking for business to send your way. All that is expected of you is to actively look for business to send to your fellow chapter members.

13. How are problems resolved?

Our chapter has a board and ethics chair who will resolve any issues that arise.

14. What's my network?

Your network is the people you know — your family, friends, staff, co–workers, clients, etc. If you start to think about it, it's probably hundreds of people.

Chances are, the next person you meet probably knows hundreds of people as well. If you try to sell your business to the next person you meet, you might get lucky — but build a relationship with them and you'll gain access to their network.

15. What's a Power Partner?

Some people will naturally be able to refer more business to you than others. Oftentimes it's because your businesses work together on a transaction, are complementary industries or just have the same target clientele.

Here's a few examples:

Working together on a transaction — buying a home:
Real Estate, Mortgage Loans, Escrow, Property Insurance, Appraiser

Complementary Industries — advertising and promotion:
Web Design, Graphic Design, Printer, Artist, Marketing Consultant

Target Clientele — health and wellness:
Chiropractor, Physician, Massage Therapist, Health & Nutrition Products, Acupuncture

Figuring out who your Power Partners are and spending extra time building a relationship with them is a worthy endeavor.
